CEO and President of YWCA Brooklyn Martha Kamber will be Recognized as the Eighth Annual Atlantic Avenue Ambassador

Brooklyn, New York – August 19, 2019 –  Chief Executive Officer and President of the YWCA Brooklyn Martha Kamber will be recognized as the Eighth Annual Atlantic Avenue Ambassador Award recipient at the 45th Annual Atlantic Antic™ Festival. This award, presented annually by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC), will take place for the first time ever on the Atlantic Antic™ Community Stage, located on Atlantic Avenue, between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue, on Sunday, September 29th, 2019 at 2:20pm.

Martha Kamber has been the Chief Executive Officer and President of the YWCA Brooklyn for the past 12 years where she built over 300 units of affordable, permanent homes for low-income women and homeless survivors of domestic violence. Martha Kamber also built a new Social Justice Community Center dedicated to gender equity and racial justice which is utilized by over 100 nonprofit and civic groups in Brooklyn. 

Martha Kamber led the development of the organization’s community programs including: college access; immigrant services; economic empowerment; wellness and trauma-informed programming. She is also recognized for her leading advocacy in the areas of racial justice and gender equality. 

Martha Kamber has over thirty-five years of nonprofit management experience and has worked extensively in the areas of women’s empowerment, gender-based violence prevention, affordable housing, public health, education and advocacy. She holds advanced certificates in executive nonprofit leadership from the Harvard Business School and Columbia University as well as a master’s degree in education from Brooklyn College. 

Martha Kamber is on the board of the National Association of YWCA Executives, the YWCA World Service Council, the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District, and Community Board 7. She is also the former Vice President of UN Women, New York Metro Chapter. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the 2018 Public Service Award from the Brooklyn Borough President and the Shirley Chisholm Woman of Distinction Award from the NY City Council. Martha lives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn where she is active in various neighborhood initiatives.

The Atlantic Avenue Ambassador Award is presented annually by the AALDC to a community leader of businessperson who has contributed outstandingly in enhancing the cultural and economic development of Atlantic Avenue and its surrounding areas. The First Annual Ambassador Award honored Atlantic Avenue business owner Charlie Sahadi in 2011, followed by District Attorney Charles Hynes in 2013, Assembly Member Joan L. Millman in 2014, AALDC Co-Vice President and Community Leader Sue Wolfe in 2015, Council Member Stephen T. Levin in 2018, Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon in 2017, and New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery in 2018.
