Shop  & Dine (Dec. 5-19) and Walk the Windows (Dec. 12, 11-7 p.m.)
Annual Toy/Book Drive to benefit Brooklyn homeless shelters

Brooklyn, New York – Nov. 24, 2015 – On Friday, Dec. 4, from 6-8 p.m., the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC) will host its Annual Atlantic Avenue Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Party at the Belarusian Church, at 401 Atlantic Ave., corner of Bond Street. The tree lighting, to be officiated by New York City Councilmember Stephen Levin, will start at 6 p.m. sharp. Community leaders, representatives, and Santa Claus will be present.

The holiday party will follow with live performances, the announcement of the holiday windows competition winners, and the toy/book drive. AALDC President, Christian Haag, and local officials will give special holiday greetings and AALDC Board Director Eileen Trilli will MC the event. This event is free and open to the public.

Performers. Carolers, Brooklyn Youth Chorus and the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Hard Nut Singers, will sing holiday tunes on the avenue from 5-6 p.m. and at the tree lighting at 6 pm. The holiday party features Brooklyn Music Factory’s Big City Country Band; local Public School 38 performing a chorus and tap number; the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s Suzuki Violin Ensemble; and the Brooklyn Ballet accompanied by rising star, opera vocalist, Sara Stevens. Frank Posa of Powerhouse Entertainment and Rockland Sound & Lighting will DJ.

Following the entertainment, complimentary holiday treats and refreshments donated by Nunu Chocolates, Ganso Yaki, Moon Café, Hollow Nickel, La Flor Del Paraiso, Betty Bakery, Bacchus, Grandma’s House, The Soul Spot Restaurant, Sottocasa Pizzeria, Two 8 Two Bar & Burger, Sahadi’s, Brado, Pair Wine & Cheese and Luzzo’s BK will be served.

Annual Atlantic Avenue Holiday Window Design Competition Awards, in various categories, are given to stores and restaurants based on original creative concept; use of materials; display technique; merchandising acumen; and holiday-oriented and eye-catching appeal for pedestrians. Window designs need to be installed by 6 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 2, when the panel of judges will set off from Hollow Nickel restaurant at 494 Atlantic Ave. to judge windows.

This year’s window judges are Arlene Kriv, Director of Marketing, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music; Carol Leven, Assistant Vice President of Communications, Fashion Institute of Technology; Dalibor Porcic, Creative Director, Illustrator, Photographer; Terry Urban, Artist and Curator/Board member of Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC); Brian Vines, BRIC-TV’s Senior Producer of Community Affairs Programming and producer/host of BK Live.

The Annual Toy/Book Drive will benefit two local mother and child homeless shelters: the Arbor Inn and Providence House (for women transitioning back into society following incarceration). Guests are asked to contribute by bringing a gift-wrapped new toy or book and marking the wrapping with the appropriate age and gender. Sponsors of the toy drive are NYU Langone Medical Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, St. Francis College, Grandma’s House, Fillmore Real Estate and Dodge YMCA.

From Dec. 5-19 a Shop & Dine promotion provides 10 percent off selected items and/or other specials at participating stores and restaurants. On Saturday, Dec. 12 from 11-7 p.m., Walk the Windows to view more than 100 quality and inviting restaurants, boutiques and shops with extraordinary gifts for all ages.
